NCC Warns Nigerians Against Buying Pre-Registered SIM Cards
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its warning to Nigerians not to buy pre-registered SIMs because this practice is illegal and could lead to severe consequences, including imprisonment.
The NCC issued the warning to Nigerians about the significant risks associated with buying pre-registered SIM cards, including identity theft, financial fraud, criminal activity and urged them not to compromise their safety by avoiding these illicitly sold SIM cards.
The NCC highlighted that the use of pre-registered SIM cards compromises the accuracy of consumers’ information and impede efforts to identify and apprehend the actual perpetrators of crimes.
The Commission harped on the importance of purchasing SIM cards through official channels to ensure proper registration, thus protecting users from falling victim to cybercrimes, amongst others and sustaining the integrity of Nigeria’s telecommunications system.
The NCC, noted that it has mounted a campaign aimed at educating the public on the potential risks associated with pre-registered SIM cards and encouraging compliance with legal guidelines to boost national security.
