Tracka Exposes N2.4Bn Federal Government Projects Scandal In 9 States
A staggering N2.4 billion was disbursed for 15 federal government projects across nine states in 2023, yet not a single contractor has commenced work on these sites, according to Tracka, BudgIT’s service delivery promotion platform.
This shocking revelation raises serious concerns about corruption, mismanagement, and the lack of accountability in Nigeria’s public project execution.
Some of the abandoned projects include the rehabilitation of a major road linking Nasarawa to the North and Southern parts of Nigeria, for which N401 million was paid to Mainstream Contractors in December 2023.
Another example is the fencing, landscaping, and completion of Onicha-Uku Town Hall and Event Centre in Delta, which received N153 million from August to November 2023.
Tracka’s 2023/2024 report, “Achieving National Development through Efficient Service Delivery,” launched on January 30, 2025, in Abuja, highlights the alarming rate of abandoned projects nationwide.
The report reveals that out of 1,404 projects worth N282.5 billion monitored across 25 states, 720 projects (51%) were completed, while 129 projects (9%) were either abandoned or fraudulently executed.
Gabriel Okeowo, BudgIT’s Country Director, expressed concern over the non-execution of critical public projects despite the disbursement of funds.
He urged the current administration and anti-corruption agencies to investigate these discrepancies and prosecute erring contractors.
The report also ranks ten Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) based on project implementation rates.
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) emerged as the top performer with a 78% project completion rate, while the Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs ranked low, reflecting inefficiencies in project execution.
This disturbing trend of abandoned projects and mismanaged funds underscores the need for greater transparency, accountability, and oversight in Nigeria’s public project execution.
