NPA to approach FEC for reconstruction of burnt head office

Following the huge loss that emanated from the burning down of the Nigerian Ports Authority head office during the #EndSARs protest, decisions has been taken to approach the Federal Executive Council to ask for the reconstruction of the NPA building.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, dropped the hint during an assessment tour of the NPA headquarters in Lagos to establish the level of damage caused by hoodlums.

A statement issued in Abuja by his aide, Taiye Edwin, quoted the minister as saying that the NPA’s request from FEC for the reconstruction of the building would depend on the structure’s integrity.

Amaechi lamented on how the hoodlums destroyed public properties during the protest, adding that the culprits must be made to face the wrath of the law.

The statement quoted the minister as saying, “This is completely disastrous. It is not enough to vent your anger about police brutality in this manner. How does damaging government property concern the police?

“Whether you like it or not, this will be refurbished or rebuilt with government funds. That means the funds also belong to those who set this place ablaze.

“In governance, those who commit crime should be held liable and appropriate punishment meted out on them.”

The minister highlighted that the right to protest was defined in the laws of Nigeria, but it did not include burning people’s houses or public places.
