Abia youth killed by NSCDC officer will get justice –Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has condoled the family of Mr Onyedikachi Nwaogu who was shot dead by one Robinson Abel, a personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) attached to Akwa Ibom State Command.

The Governor stated this on Friday when he paid a visit to the family of the victim at Umuokoro Umuokpo, Obingwa LGA of the State.

He described the killing of the young man as unnecessary while assuring that the killer officer would be made to face the law.

Gentechnews.com.ng recalls that the victim was allegedly shot at close range by the NSCDC official who was escorting convoy of some Chinese construction workers working on AkwaIbom road.

He was said to have been shot for allegedly demanding money from the convoy before the Chinese convoy could drive through his father’s compound, off a dilapidated road, a claim denied by the youths of the community. Ikpeazu, who drove direct to the scene of incident, from Imo Airport on his return from a trip, commended the people of Umuokoro Umuokpo for not yielding to the temptation to lynch the civil defense officer and also commended the efforts of the security agencies in handling the matter.

Accompanied by the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Janet Agbede and the Transition Committee Chairman of Obingwa LGA, Hon Nnaji Kingsley, Ikpeazu assured that his government would not abandon the wife of the late Onyedikachi and his aged mother.

He equally promised that the kids left behind by the victim would be seen through education and charged the Transition Committee Chairman to bring the widow of the victim, his aged mother and brother to meet him for further discussion.

However, the arrival of the Governor to the family compound by 5:30 pm, made the community to melt in emotion as loud cries for justice covered the entire area.

The community members decried the incessant killing of their sons by trigger-happy security officials.

One of those who spoke on the development, Mr Simon Amadi said, “An Army Officer killed somebody in Obingwa in 2019, rendering his young wife a widow.

“Army has dismissed him and the matter is in court. This year during the Covid 19 lockdown, a policeman gunned down a young petrol attendant. Now, this civil defense officer has killed another of our sons. What have we done to deserve this? We demand justice for once.”Amadi bemoaned.

Obingwa LGA is the hometown of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
