BREAKING: Senate confirms Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman for second tenure

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mahmood, a presidential nominee for the position he occupied in the last four years was described as a man of integrity by the Senate Committee on INEC.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya who read the report of the committee which recommended the presidential nominee for confirmation said Professor Mahmood displayed high-level intelligence and competence in his response to questions by committee members.

Gaya also said the nominee had no petition written against him.

He was confirmed after a voice vote ordered by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawal.

Mahmood Yakubu is the first Chairman to have been reappointed to the position since the inception of the body saddled with the conduct of election in Nigeria.
