FAAN seeks N580bn to rehabilitate airport runways, improve infrastructure

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said it needs N580bn to rehabilitate runways and improve airport infrastructure nationwide.

FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku disclosed this during a visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ibrahim Kana, noting that many airport runways, built in the late 1970s, had exceeded their designed lifespan.

Kuku said “Our runways have a lifespan of 20 to 25 years, but most were built in 1978. They require major rehabilitation to ensure safety and efficiency.”

She highlighted that other infrastructure, including terminals, also needs urgent attention, adding “Obsolete equipment, such as old fire tenders, generators, and worn-out conveyor belts, have increased maintenance costs and reduced efficiency. These issues require significant investment to address.”

FAAN Managing Director pointed out the challenges related to airport security and land encroachment, adding “Many airports lack perimeter fences, making them vulnerable to encroachment. Security risks are increasing with the growth in air travel, requiring enhanced measures.”

According to her, there is the need for deliberate planning to address abandoned projects and ensure sustainable development.

In her words “We need to be deliberate about fixing issues at airports. Public-private partnerships will play a key role in attracting investments and developing underutilised assets.”

Kuku also reveaked the plans to focus on staff training, improve safety protocols, and align operations with national and international standards.

She emphasized on the importance of integrating environmentally friendly practices, including waste management and reducing carbon emissions.

FAAN, she said would prioritise upgrading critical facilities at major airports while expanding capacity at regional airports to meet growing passenger and cargo demands.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ibrahim Kana lauded FAAN’s efforts and assured of the ministry’s support for its modernisation plans.

Kana said “The aviation sector requires continuous improvement. With the right strategies, we can bring Nigeria’s airports to global standards.”
