FG Donates Gunboat To Nigerian Navy To Boost Maritime Security, Curb Oil Theft
Abitto Global Services, a leading water transport company, in a substantial move to enhance maritime security along the Calabar river channels, has donated a patrol gunboat to the Nigerian Navy with the Navy providing other essential equipment to curb oil theft along the Calabar water channel.
The company’s donation which is aimed at enhancing Naval patrols and security operations along the waterways of Cross River State and its environment, took place at Abitto Jetty, Marina Resort in Calabar.
Speaking at the event, Richard Akinaka, MD/CEO of Abitto Global Services, announced that the donation is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and a demonstration of its commitment to maritime security.
“We are here to donate one of our newly designed swamp boats, while the Nigerian Navy provided the engine and other components,in ensuring safer waterways for travel,” Akinaka said.
He explained the importance of stakeholder collaboration in strengthening maritime security, adding that his company is dedicated to fostering partnerships that will enhance water transportation and economic activities between Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
Receiving the patrol boat on behalf of Chief of the Naval Staff, Commodore Ajomabi Oride, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, commended the donation as a significant boost to the Navy’s operations.
“The Nigerian Navy’s primary role is to protect the nation’s maritime interests and its citizens. NNS Victory is responsible for securing the Calabar Channel and adjoining creeks. Since Abitto operates within this area, they have deemed it necessary to assist the Navy in its security efforts by providing this boat,” Commodore i Oride stated.
Commodore Oride also expressed gratitude on behalf of the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, urging other companies operating in the region to emulate Abitto’s example by supporting the Navy’s security initiatives.
“We appreciate this wonderful gesture. I use this opportunity to call on other companies operating in this area to support the Nigerian Navy in enhancing security, ensuring safer waters for all,” the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory said.
The donation emphasized the growing recognition of public-private partnerships (PPPs) as a critical component in maritime security and economic growth.
