Joe Ajaero Emerges as Nigeria Labour Congress New President

As the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) concluded its national delegates’ conference in Abuja, the National Executive Committee, (NEC), of the Congress unanimously named Joe Ajaero as its new president.

A former Deputy President, Ajaero emerged as successor to Ayuba Wabba, whose eight-year tenure just ended.

Ajaero was a sole candidate for the office of the NLC president.

Ajaero, prior to this, had served as the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).

He was also a member of the Presidential Committee on Power Sector Reforms, set up by the late ex-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Recall, that Wabba was first elected in 2015 and later re-elected in 2019 for his second term and                                completed his tenure during the 13th quadrennial national delegates conference in Abuja.

During his farewell speech while commissioning a guest house project, named after Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the foremost President of the NLC, Wabba said “unionism was not only about contestations and agitations but also, resource management and investment”

In his address, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, stated that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was committed to improving the minimum wage of workers to boost productivity.

Mustapha, the special guest of honour at the conference, said the federal government was concerned about improving the welfare of public service, adding that the edifice was a delight for the NLC as well as its workers.

According to Mustapha, all the noticeable achievements and legacies are for the Nigerian masses,  and commended the ex-NLC President, Wabba for constructing such edifice that would yield additional income to the Congress.
