Lagos plans to expand housing projects, sustainability of existing estates
As Lagos State government continues to face challenges in view of rapid urbanisation which has led to tremendous increase in population, it says it is expanding housing projects by tackling housing issues from both the demand and supply sides as well as ensuring sustainability of existing estates.
The State government in a report on ‘Towards a greater Lagos’ disclosed that four major housing projects were ready for commissioning, adding that on the demand side, it had introduced the rent-to-own and rental housing policies aimed at making housing more affordable and accessible to the citizenry.
The report added that the policies were especially targeted at low and middle income earners in the formal and informal sectors.
The report noted that in February, 492 families were presented keys to the apartments of the Lateef Kayode Jakande Housing Estate in Igando, adding that the exercise came up four months after the Housing Estate was completed and commissioned by the current administration.
The report listed the scheme to include LagosHoms, Igbogbo Scheme with 360 home units comprising 120 one-bedrooms, 120 two-bedrooms and 120 three-bedrooms.
Others include Lagos State affordable housing scheme, Topo Badagry with 252 two-bedroom apartments; Courtland Villas, behind Alhaja Femi Okunnu Estate, Igbohushu, Lekki with 120 units of four-bedroom maisonettes and BQs; and Lekki Apartments, Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki.
The report also stated that keys of Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande Gardens Housing Scheme, Igando have been handed over to 492 beneficiaries.
