NCC Reiterates Commitment To Nigeria’s Digital Growth At Enugu Tech Festival

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has reiterated the Commission’s steadfast commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation.

Maida made this commitment during the recently concluded Enugu Tech Festival, which he described as a vibrant showcase of innovation and a reflection of the country’s steady progress in the digital space.

He affirmed that the event provided a platform for stakeholders to explore emerging technologies and reinforce Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy.

According to the EVC NCC, Nigeria is well-positioned to leapfrog into global competitiveness through a robust and evolving regulatory framework, adding that sustained reforms and strategic policies would continue to drive growth and innovation across the telecommunications sector.

Maida commended the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, for his administration’s forward-looking digital acceleration roadmap, describing the governor’s initiatives as instrumental to Nigeria’s broader digitalisation agenda.

According to the NCC boss, “Telecommunications’ exponential growth is not accidental but the result of deliberate reforms, policies, and structural frameworks designed to foster competition, attract investment, and protect consumers.”

Speaking on policy direction, he stated that the NCC, in collaboration with stakeholders, is reviewing the National Telecommunications Policy 2000 to develop a more inclusive and consumer-focused framework and assured that the revised policy will align with emerging technologies and support sustained sectoral growth.

“My brief message to the tech enthusiasts gathered there was simple: vision and focus are essential to achieving the future we imagine for ourselves.

“We have seen this clearly in the telecommunications industry. Twenty-six years ago, Nigeria had barely 500,000 fixed telephone lines. Today, we have over 179 million mobile connections. That transformation did not happen by chance—it was driven by policy direction, regulatory clarity, investment, and sustained vision.

“It is in that same spirit that we have commenced the consultation process for the review of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000, which has shaped the Nigerian telecom landscape for over two decades.

“Our goal, at the Nigerian Communications Commission is clear: to ensure that the next National Telecommunications Policy defines the kind of industry we want to see in the coming decade—one that embraces and drives innovation, and fosters an environment responsive to the dynamics of emerging technologies,” EVC NCC added.

Maida also commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu, implemented through the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.

He hinted that Nigeria currently boasts over 179 million active mobile lines, attributing the milestone to visionary leadership and strategic reforms in the sector.
