NCC releases Statistics on Telecom Industry Trends, last Update August 2023

 

 

 

Consistent with Section 89 Subsection 3(d) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 (NCA 2003), the Commission is mandated to monitor and report on the state of the Nigerian telecommunications industry, provide statistical analyses and identify industry trends with regard to services, tariffs, operators, technology, subscribers, issues of competition and dominance, etc. with a view to identifying areas where regulatory intervention would be needed. The Commission has released the last update on August 03, 2023.

Subscriber / Teledensity

This section contains the sum total of all active telephony subscribers and teledensity as calculated on monthly and annual basis. Teledensity is defined as the number of active telephone connections per one hundred (100) inhabitants living within an area and is expressed as a percentage figure.

The Subscription is 220,086,951 while Teledensity percentage is 115.30%.

Subscriber / Operator Data

Airtel has 60,190,732 (27.39%), 9Mobile has 13,578,431 (6.18%), Globacom has 61,333,528 (27.91%) while MTN has 84,663,653 (38.52%). So MTN leads other networks in Subscriber/operator data as at June 2023.

This section contains information on the number of active subscribers for telephony services on each of the licensed service providers utilizing different technologies including GSM, CDMA, Fixed Wireless and Fixed Wired (i.e. Landline).

 

 

 

Mobile Peak Period (Voice) Tariff

This section contains information on the annualized average cost per minute of a voice call during call traffic peak periods, across all the major telephony operators in the country. The information provided shows the cost for calls made to a number within the same network (On-Net) and a number on another network (Off-Net).

Percentage (%) Market Share by Technology

This shows what percentage of subscribers are utilizing telecommunications services per the various technologies/standards currently deployed in Nigeria – i.e. GSM, CDMA and Fixed Wired/Wireless technology.

 

Internet Subscriber Data

This section contains information on the number of active subscribers for data (internet) services on each of the licensed service providers utilizing the different technologies, i.e. GSM and CDMA.

Broadband Penetration

This section describes the broadband subscriptions in Nigeria.

As at the month of June 2023 the Subscriptions for Broadband is 89,730,341 while the Penetration recorded is 47.01%.

Porting Activities of Mobile Network Operators (GSM)

This section describes the monthly porting trend in the telecommunications sector per mobile operator and refers to the number of transactions whereby a mobile number is transferred from one service provider to another on the request of a subscriber who wishes to change service provider while keeping the same telephone number.

Incoming (Inward) Porting means the number of numbers ported from another service provider’s network into a service provider’s own network.

Percentage(%) Contribution of Telecoms Industry to GDP

This section describes the percentage contributed to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria by the telecommunications industry. The telecommunications industry in Q1 2023 contributed 14.13% to GDP.
