Nigeria Suffers Total Nationwide Blackout via 4th Grid Collapse in 88 Days
Nigeria has once again been plunged into darkness on Sunday, June 12, following the national electricity transmission system popularly known as grid total collapse which occurred barely 56 days after the grid crashed to zero on April 8.
The grid collapses occurred on March 14 and 15 2022, then April 8, and Sunday, June 12, 2022.
A source from a Generation Company (GenCo), confirmed this collapse, adding that the nationwide outage began around 6pm as the generation from various power plants dipped.
According to him, they experienced a grid collapse at 18:49 hours, adding that as of 6:00pm on Sunday, June 12, 2022, power generation on the national grid was 1,353.80 megawatts (MW), generated by 13 GenCos shortly before the system crashed.
It was gathered that there are 24 active Gencos on the grid system, and out of the 13 GenCos on Sunday evening, only Delta (Ughelli) GenCo had up to 371MW; Rivers IPP did 156MW, Omotosho had 130MW, Olorunsogo had 128MW and the other nine GenCos did not generate up to 100MW.
Consequently, the baseload GenCos which are the three hydropower plants that guarantee stable electricity were affected as Kainji had 51MW, Jebba had 88MW and Shiroro was down, barely 45 minutes before the national grid collapsed.
It was also gathered that the highest generation on Saturday before the collapse was 3,685MW.
As at the time of filing this report, TCN has not issued a report on the remote and immediate cause of the grid collapse.
Reports from the Nigeria System Operations, a section of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and grid manager, indicate that there has been a lull in power generation.
