NiRA records over 3,000 fresh .ng domains at 2nd level

A total of 3,273 non-premium 2nd level .ng domain names were recently registered two months into the .ng promo launched by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) to increase Nigeria’s online identity.
NiRA is responsible for maintaining the database of registered names in the .ng country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) namespace.
So far, the grand total number of active domain names under .ng ccTLD is 171,129.
According to a recent NiRA’s report, the number reached in September 2020 of active .ng domains on 3rd level stands at 151,183 and those on 2nd level accounting for remainder 19,946.
The President of NiRA, Muhammed Rudman, said that the .ng promo started on the 24th August 2020 and it runs for three months.
He explained that the price reduction was for new .ng domain name registration at the 2nd level.
“The price reduction for fresh registrations at the 2nd level does not apply to premium domain names.
“So from 24th August to 23rd October 2020 (61 days), a total of 3,273 non-premium 2nd level .ng domain names were freshly registered,” Rudman said.
NiRA and the 23 participating registrars (find more details on https://register.ng) embarked on promotional exercises (on social media platforms, radio jingles, BRT buses, print media adverts, web adverts).
.ng is Nigeria’s identity on the Internet. Like the country’s currency, the Naira and dialling code +234, .ng is the official ICANN approved ccTLD for Nigeria, which is globally recognized and accepted.
“In January 2017, NiRA publicly declared a mechanism to be used for reducing prices of .ng domain names based on the number of actual .ng domain registrations at the second level, so as to stimulate the uptake of the .ng domain name string and demystify the perception that .ng domain names at the second level are expensive,” the President of NiRA explained.
This mechanism which is known as the ‘NiRA Price Charter’, he added, “has been beneficial in reducing the price of .ng domain names for over three years now”.
