NIS member raises alarm on quacks taking over land surveying

A fellow of the Yomi Babadoye, has raised alarm and urged the institution not to allow charlatans to take over the duty of surveying in the country.

Babadoye raised this concern in Ilorin at the inauguration of the 18th executive of the Kwara State branch of the NIS, adding that the position of survey in Nigeria is not palatable as quacks are taking up surveying job.

“The 1962 Survey Act stipulates that every survey in the country should be carried out by a competent surveyor. Today, those not authorised are doing it; this is not in the interest of the country. We should not allow charlatans to take up our duty,” Babadoye said.

He applauded the outgoing executive of the institution on its achievements especially securing a permanent office for the body in the state.

The Vice Chairman of Ilorin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dikrulahi Balogun, hinted that surveying was not the only profession that was threatened and urged NIS to collaborate with others in the discharge of it duties.

The new chairman of NIS in the state, Mr Musa Eletu, in his acceptance speech, said that the executive would tackle some of the professional challenges including the ties between land Surveyors and other professionals in the building industry including town planners, estate surveyors and valuers, engineers, lawyers, quantity surveyors and builders.
