NIWA Issues Safety Alert Over Danger of Submerged Dredger Near Eko Bridge

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has alerted the general public, especially waterway users about the presence of a submerged dredger near Eko Bridge by the Ebute-Ero Jetty in Lagos.

According to NIWA, the dredger sank on Saturday, March 29, 2025, and now poses a significant threat to navigational safety and the surrounding marine environment.

It noted that the obstruction is particularly dangerous during low tide or in poor visibility conditions, increasing the risk for river crafts, boats, and local fishing activities.

NIWA stated that it is working in collaboration with marine safety officials to install warning signs and navigational markers around the affected area.

“In the meantime, all boat operators, fishermen, and waterway users are strongly advised to avoid the location until proper removal or mitigation measures are fully implemented.

“We urge all stakeholders to exercise the highest caution and cooperate with safety authorities to prevent accidents and ensure the continued protection of our inland waterways.

“NIWA remains committed to restoring safe navigation in the area as swiftly as possible. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter”, it emphasized.
