Police to begin crackdown on third party motor insurance policy defaulters, Feb 1

• Says only 30 percent of vehicles in Nigeria are insured

Indication has emerged that anyone driving without a Third-Party Motor Insurance policy will face legal consequences, as the Nigeria Police Force has announced February 1, 2025, as the start date for nationwide inspection and enforcement to ensure compliance with the law.

This was announced when the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin paid a working visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Commissioner for Insurance (CFI) congratulated the IGP on his notable achievements, particularly the recent license acquisition for the Police Insurance Company, and reminded the IGP of his earlier request for assistance in enforcing all compulsory insurance policies, but this time, the CFI narrowed his focus on only Third-Party Motor Insurance.

Omosehin promised to provide the necessary support to ensure seamless enforcement of third-party motor insurance across the country.

In the quest to guarantee the success of this initiative, the Commissioner for Insurance harped on the need for a mass awareness campaign and education of the Nigeria Police Officers.

In his response, the IGP acknowledged the position of the CFI, on the compulsory nature of third-party motor insurance in Nigeria.

Egbetokun explained that violating this law is punishable, yet unfortunately, only 30 percent of vehicles in the country are insured.

The IGP highlighted the numerous benefits of having insurance coverage, underscoring the importance of protecting lives and property.

He called on drivers to obtain at least a third-party insurance cover for their vehicles before driving on Nigerian roads.

The IGP also assured of the Police commitment in collaborating with all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and companies in ensuring the protection of lives and property of all residents.

The Deputy Commissioner, Technical, Dr. Usman Jankara, the Deputy Commissioner Finance and Administration, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Director Legal, Enforcement & Market Development, Dr. Talmis Usman, Director of Inspectorate, Mr. Bankole Ajebola of NAICOM, Senior Police Officers, and others, were in attendence at the meeting.
