REDAN Plans 100 Houses in each 774 Local Govt Councils, FCT
Real Estate Developers Association (REDAN) has initiated a national housing programme tagged Rural-Urban Housing Initiative (RUHI-774), aimed at developing at least 100 housing units in each of the 774 local government councils of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory.
The President of REDAN, Aliyu Wamakko, made this known at the just concluded 4th Jakande Housing Lecture Series, themed “Driving Affordable Housing in Nigeria: The Cooperative Approach”, held in Lagos on Thursday.
Wamakko said “It is designed to enable any citizen to own a home at his/her Local Government of origin or anywhere of their choice in the country.”
According to him, the Association was working assiduously with the Family Homes Funds Limited and Shelter Afrique to finance the projects with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mortgage Banking Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company supporting the flagship project, stressing that the Return on Investment is guaranteed.
He said that the government should concentrate its energy in boosting the Nigerian economy via massive housing construction.
He noted that housing development does not require an incubation period, adding that what is needed is strategic and holistic planning.
The Executive Chairman, First World Communities Limited, Tunde Reis, called on leaders to rule by compassion by helping Nigerians have access to affordable housing through pro-poor friendly policies as demonstrated by late Lateef Jakande, former governor of Lagos State.
Reis said, “The late Jakande dedicated his life to the provision of affordable housing for people by building over 30,000 housing units across the state. Besides, affordable housing could be driven through government housing schemes as demonstrated by Jakande.”
