Butler Highlights on Building a Business from Zero to a Multi-Million Dollar Empire at GTCO Fashion Weekend

GTCO Fashion Weekend 2025 hosted Melissa Butler, visionary founder of The Lip Bar, an award-winning beauty brand committed to challenging beauty standards and reminding everyone that they are enough by creating products that celebrate all skin tones in a masterclass.
Butler shared her experiences at the GTCO Fashion Weekend 2025 in Lagos in a masterclass session titled “Building a Business from Zero to a Multi-Million Dollar Empire” by thrilling the audience on lessons learned in her entrepreneurial drive.
Butler highlighted the inspiration behind her signature red lipstick, “Boss Lady,” which has become a bestseller loved by women of all complexions, adding “I started The Lip Bar because I wanted Black women to feel confident in our own skin.
“I knew the power of a red lip could give women confidence to own the room, but getting the right shade was tricky. We spent months perfecting a formula that genuinely works on every single complexion.”
According to her, unyielding commitment to creating inclusive beauty products accentuated the brand’s philosophy: confidence for every woman.
Speaking on her early financial lesson that molded ‘The Lip Bar’s growth: pricing missteps’, she noted that there is a need to observe the marketing trend and do adjustment where necessary.
In her words: “We initially priced our products at $20, which was too high for our target audience. After adjusting to $12, we hit our margins a bit, but it opened doors for retail partnerships with stores like Target and increased overall sales.”
Butler talked about the significance of customer feedback and her resilience in achieving success in her business, stressing that “It’s easy to feel jealous of someone else’s success, but envy kills. Focus on your brand, talk to your customers, and understand your market. Even if you only have two customers, ask them what they need. That’s how you grow.”
Butler personifies resilience, determination, and a passion for empowerment, hence she said that what began as a kitchen experiment has evolved into one of the most successful Black-owned beauty brands in the U.S.
“Today, The Lip Bar’s vibrant range of products can be found in major retail stores nationwide,” she emphasized.
Butler’s story will inspire entrepreneurs to pursue vision-driven business plans while staying focused and authentic.
Butler told the audience that “Our goal is simple. We want every woman to know they’re enough. Confidence is the ultimate beauty.”
