FAAN Mobilises Traditional Institutions, Others to Strengthen Safety, Security Around MMIA

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reiterated its commitment to deepening collaboration with host communities around the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, through sustained engagement with traditional rulers and key stakeholders.

FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Olubunmi Kuku, who was represented by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, delivered her address at a stakeholders’ meeting with royal fathers from MMIA host communities.

The meeting featured prominent traditional rulers including Isa Abiodun Shekoni, Kuti Shakirudeen Adeshina, Babatunde Akanbi Nasiru Lawal Ogunronbi, Morufu Adisa Ojoola, and Akeeb Adebowale Rauf.

In her remarks, FAAN MD expressed appreciation for the continued support and cooperation of the host communities, noting that MMIA serves not only as a national asset but also as Nigeria’s gateway to the global community.

She highlighted the crucial role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace, order, and cultural values essential for protecting critical infrastructure.

FAAN boss also drew attention to increasing safety concerns, particularly bird strikes, linking them to poor waste disposal practices and indiscriminate land use around airport environments.

FAAN’s Environment Department displayed a comprehensive presentation on the dangers posed by bird strikes to aviation safety, highlighting how environmental mismanagement in surrounding communities contributes significantly to operational risks.

The Aviation Security Department equally addressed issues related to the protection of lives and property within and around airport facilities, stressing the importance of sustained collaboration with traditional rulers to enhance security and maintain law and order.

In their responses, the royal fathers acknowledged the concerns raised and pledged their continued support.

They also presented community-specific challenges and requests aimed at strengthening cooperation and addressing environmental and security issues.

FAAN, however,  assured stakeholders of its commitment to ongoing engagement and collaboration with all relevant parties to ensure aviation safety, improved security, and peaceful coexistence with host communities.
