MAN tasks South East governors on manufacturing sector
The governors of the five South Eastern states have been called upon to do more for the manufacturing sector in their various states. National President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Engineer Ahmed Mansur made the appeal during the body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Enugu recently.
Mansur, who was represented by the body’s Vice President, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nzewi, urged the region governors to partner with local manufacturing companies in their states. The MAN boss said, “I have no doubt that you share our concern with the low level of industrialization in our country, especially the manufacturing sector, which currently contributes less than 10 percent to our country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“This is indeed most undesirable considering the fact that the manufacturing sector is undoubtedly the bedrock of any thriving economy and the major provider of employments and economic growth opportunity.
“I therefore appeal to the government in this region (South East) to support manufacturing sector by creating a more conducive environment for existing and prospective industries in their various states to thrive,”
The MAN’s Vice Chairperson in Anambra State, Mrs. Ada Chukwuedozie, called on the federal government to make policies that will boost the country’s, manufacturing sector.
Chukwuedozie who was represented by Mr.Chuzi Igweobi noted that such policies would make it easy for the manufacturers to compete with manufacturers in other regions of the country.
“There is the need to develop critical infrastructure that will aid manufacturing in Igbo land,” she said.
She lamented that lack of infrastructure was negatively hindering members of the association from making meaningful progress in their industrial operations.
Anambra State Deputy Governor, Chief Nkem Okeke, urged the state governors in his region to take proactive measures to revive the manufacturing sector in their various states.
He said that his Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has done much for the manufacturing sector of the state.
Okeke charged other governors in his region to emulate governors Obiano in supporting the real sector of their various states.
