NIQS, Shelter Afrique sign MoU on capacity building

The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors,(NIQS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Shelter Afrique in accordance with the institute’s vision of deepening capacity building for professionals in the construction industry.

The President of the institute, Mohammed Abba Tor, disclosed that the agreement would allow for capacity building of members of NIQS in resource management; thus strengthening the skills of professionals in the utilization of intervention funds for projects.

The statement revealed that the institute was leveraging Shelter Afrique’s recently announced intention to unveil about $2.5bn bonds with the Central Bank of Nigeria as part of its intervention efforts at bridging the over 70 million housing deficit problem facing the country.

Commenting on the MoU, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Shelter Afrique, Andrew Chimphona, was quoted as saying the agreement was about not compromising regulations of building, to avoid architectural defects that could lead to the collapse of buildings.

“That is why we at Shelter Afrique when we are investing money on any project we want to make sure that all the processes that are required to be followed are observed to the later to ensure that we ensure that the structural integrity of the building is really acceptable and passes the right regulatory stages,” Chimphona added.

Meanwhile, The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors has appealed to the three tiers of government to move away from carbon polluting construction projects to climate resilient ones.

NIQS said the Global Status Report has shown that buildings and construction jointly accounted for 36 per cent of global final energy use and 39 per cent of energy related carbon dioxide emissions.
