Parents, Stakeholders back AAU Ekpoma, NMCN to hold 2024 Combined Induction for Nursing Graduates

  • Combined induction, convocation is not forbidden, but a norm in institution based on circumstance- Jones

As the dust is settling with the emergence of a new management team in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (AAU) that have fine tuned and saw to the release of students ‘graduates of nursing science department this year, some disgruntled graduates of 2017 set are trying to become a clog in the wheel of the success achieved by the Ag. VC. Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel and his team by writing a protest letter asking the school and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to organise their induction first before those of 2018 set.

Investigation by Gentechnews that has been spearheading the campaign about AAU Ekpoma habouring baggage of graduates without certificates and results through news reportage has shown that these graduates of 2017 set are unserious and deviants that ought to be celebrating their forth coming induction and looking forward to their future endeavours, instead of canvassing for hierarchy for induction ceremony.

Gentechnews has been following this development in AAU Ekpoma for many years and reportedly on 13th September, 2024, drew the attention of the current Ag. VC, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel that AAU Ekpoma is still harbouring baggage of graduates without final year statement of results or certificates while those in the Nursing Science Department, who have passed their Nursing and Midwifery Council Exam for over two years have not been inducted because AAU Ekpoma has not released their final year results.

Gentechnews lauds the current Ag. VC, AAU, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel, that AAU Ekpoma after the news was reported, changed the tide and for the first time the Nursing Sciences students who finished their final year exam this year have had the final results approved by the Senate of the school. It is unprecedented and a step to show that AAU Ekpoma is about to return back to its lost glory.

“We commend the HOD Nursing Sciences Department and the immediate past Acting VC, AAU, Prof Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin for his dexterity and doggedness in ensuring that AAU Ekpoma finally got approval and secured the accreditation of the Nursing programme from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria before the end of his tenure.”

Some parents who spoke with Gentechnews on condition of anonymity opined that the action of the Nursing Science graduates who are still trying to protest instead of celebrating that their suffering as they claim is about coming to an end is a clear pointer to the fact that they passed through the school but the school did not pass through them.

“We urged the management of AAU Ekpoma and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to ignore the ranting of these graduates who are saying that they want to protest against the combined NMCN induction ceremony that is coming up shortly. Most higher institutions in Nigeria often conduct about four-year convocation ceremonies in one day.

“The day of induction does not take the shine from anyone. What is paramount is your year of graduation and the year you passed your NMCN exam and how employable you may be out there when the time comes,” one of the parents said.

A social commentator and publisher, Peter Jones highlighted that “the graduates who are talking of hierarchy in their agitation to protest are feigning ignorance, because circumstance such as theirs was caused by delay in the release of their final year result which kept their induction in abeyance. Now that their results and that of the set following them have been released by the current management of AAU, they could have been happy and do the combined induction then go home and face the future.

“Management of AAU Ekpoma and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria should go ahead and hold the combined induction ceremony for the 2017 and 2018 set in order to swell the health sector market that is hit by the japa syndrome and dearth of nurses in Nigeria, now.”
